Thanks for the comments Toby, and I do respect the fact that there's not ONE right way to do things. But you seem to neglect my main point, ie. if you rate all your best shots 5 stars, there's simply no room for growth. Also the fact that the flag system is only in Lightroom is a big warning sign. Are you SURE you're going to continue using Lightroom for the rest of your photographic life? You'd be a brave man to say yes. Why not stick with a system that is ubiquitous? You don't have to do it exactly my way to see my points. I am also a SOLE photographer, and I'd never use Scott's methods because to me, they make no sense at all....

I wast't being incendiary, I just think a man with such influence should be careful what he tells people.

And by the way, I don't give a damn about traffic to my inconsequential blog, I just tell is as I see it.

Ok, so you don't like Scott's star rating advice or his use of flags instead. So what. As a photographer, NOT a DAM specialist I whole heartedly agree with Scott. I don't care about my images that are less than a 5 star rating. They will still exist but I don't need to "pyramid" a bunch of images that frankly no one will ever see. And additionaly I don't care to see them again either. Maybe if you are an editorial photographer and have to submit a heap of images to an editor you might want to pyramid.....ok ....so. To each his own. I prefer and use a method like many of my photography colleagues which happens to be very similar to Scott's method because it makes sense for a solo photographer. Maybe it doesn't work in 100% of all the situations out there but LightRoom gives you the flexibility to tailor archiving and rating to your own needs. I see the rant on Scott as wholely unnecessary unless the intention was just to drive traffic to your blog via incendiary and controversial statements. In that case, Kudos. Good job. You certainly caught my attention in just that manner.

I am not an expert in DAM management as I assume without reservation that you are. But as a photographer I can say that Scott's method which is similar to my own works within my workflow flawlessly and I think many photographers who use lightroom would agree.

[...] In his last book on Lightroom, Scott Kelby’s less than stellar advice was to rate all your good photos as 5 stars and delete the rest… I have to say I nearly fell over when I read that (luckily I was sitting down at the time). Then he went on to suggest that you shouldn’t even use ratings and that Flags in Lightroom was a better idea… Sheesh.. I imagine Peter Krogh would be frothing at the mouth at this.
Hmm, ok I'll take your word for it. Then again, I won't. But thanks for the heads up. I'll look into it. I've just started using Lightroom, so I'd like to know how to organize my files properly.
