Actually Geoff, this time I have to disagree with you! My time is divided 50% between photography and web design, and I now feel that the equipment has peaked. Fair enough I have a full frame dSLR, but that is now almost 2 years old and I don't feel any need to upgrade. I don't tend to use fancy digital features, and I don't really need any more pixels. The lenses are pretty future proof. On the computer side I have been running the same configurations for four years now - they were acquired to deal with the biggest files I am likely to use (300mb) and the only upgrades I need a storage and more storage. If I am lusting for an upgrade it is because I want to move all my IT work (and photo work) to Mac - retaining windows machines purely for cross-platform testing.

Gadgets are another thing, I can't have too many of those......

As an afterthought to my entry, I remember hearing recently that up to 80% of professional photographers are now leasing their equipment (effectively renting it). It's a difficult concept to embrace for me, considering the cost of renting such equipment is very high, but maybe it's the way of the future.

I have seen that story of stuff. very interesting.

I so agree with you. Our spare room is full of the "latest gadgets" that are already obsolete after only a few years! I can't afford to upgrade the hardware or software I need for my photography, nor the inks and paper for printing my pictures. I wonder if there would be a market for "rental centres" where you could go in and use the new equipment for a fee each time that would make it more cost effective than having to buy new. I am dreaming of course....

This is an interesting presentation that imho tells it how it is: http://www.storyofstuff.com/ you need a bit of time to watch it but i think it's worth it.
